First, I have NO idea why Microsoft sent me this email today - March 6, 2012 - almost a year after I posted my query.  NO idea but MS is so screwed up since  Gates left, there can be no other explanation.

Next:  NO, nothing you suggested works.  I followed  your instructions to search for scan and came up with the Windows Fax and Scan window but when I tried to do a new scan, an error msg comes up Cannot complete the scan.    I tried every dropdown menu

but nothing worked, and that goes to support what Canon told me directly:  Canon cannot waste its time and resources writing drivers for an old piece of equipment which has a small user base, 8 years after the unit was first sold.

That s why I won t buy ANY Canon equipment anymore.  But I m surprised no one - not even a 3rd party - hasn t come up with a driver:  am I the only one who needs it.  I guess so.

So my workaround is this:  I have a 2nd computer with XP on the hard drive, sitting on TOP of my Win 7 computer.  When I need to scan, I just unplug the monitor and the printer output and use the XP computer.  It s a kludge, I know, but it works.

An alternate someone told me, is to embed XP into Win 7 but it seeemed like a dreary exercise.

Anyway, thanks for you offer of help but no, it did not work and now you know why.
